What is VO2 Max?

VO2 max is the maximum rate at which your body can use oxygen during intense exercise. It is widely considered the gold standard for cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. A higher VO2 max means better oxygen utilization and athletic performance.

How is VO2 Max Estimated?

Two common estimation methods are available:

Resting HR Method: VO2 = 15.3 × (Max HR / Resting HR)
Max HR = 208 − 0.7 × Age

1-Mile Walk Method:
VO2 = 132.853 − 0.0769×W − 0.3877×Age + 6.315×G − 3.2649×Time − 0.1565×HR

Example

A 30-year-old male with a resting heart rate of 60 bpm: Max HR = 208 − 0.7×30 = 187. VO2 max = 15.3 × (187/60) ≈ 47.7 mL/kg/min — rated Excellent for his age group.

What is a good VO2 max score?

Is the resting HR method accurate?
