How to Calculate SGPA
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures your academic performance for a single semester. It is the credit-weighted average of the grade points you scored in each subject taken that semester — a subject worth more credit hours pulls your SGPA more than a lighter subject.
Enter each subject from the current semester with its credit hours and the grade point earned. Add rows for every subject and remove any entered by mistake with the trash icon — your SGPA updates instantly.
Example
In one semester, a student scores 8 grade points in a 4-credit subject, 9 in a 3-credit subject, and 7 in another 4-credit subject. SGPA = (4×8 + 3×9 + 4×7) ÷ (4+3+4) = 87 ÷ 11 = 7.91 out of 10.
Common Use Cases
- Checking your performance for the semester right after results are declared.
- Estimating a semester's SGPA before results come out, using expected grades.
- Working out how each semester's SGPA feeds into your overall CGPA.
FAQs
Is SGPA the same as CGPA?
No — SGPA covers only one semester's subjects, while CGPA is the cumulative, credit-weighted average across all semesters completed so far. Use the CGPA Calculator once you have SGPA figures for multiple semesters.
Does a low SGPA in one semester ruin my CGPA?
It lowers your CGPA proportionally to that semester's total credits relative to your overall credits, but it doesn't solely determine it — strong SGPAs in other semesters, especially higher-credit ones, can offset a single weak semester over time.
Why is my SGPA weighted by credits instead of a simple average?
Credit hours reflect how much coursework and classroom time a subject represents, so a 4-credit subject is meant to count more toward your overall performance than a 1-credit subject — a simple, unweighted average would treat them as equally important.
