How is Density Calculated?
Density is mass per unit volume. It tells you how much matter is packed into a given space and is a key physical property that lets you identify materials.
kg/m³ ÷ 1000 = g/cm³
Example
A 1 kg block occupying 1 litre (0.001 m³) has a density of 1 ÷ 0.001 = 1000 kg/m³, or 1 g/cm³ — exactly the density of water. Compare your result against the material table to guess what a sample might be made of.

FAQs
How do I convert kg/m³ to g/cm³?
Divide by 1000. Because 1 kg = 1000 g and 1 m³ = 1,000,000 cm³, a density of 1000 kg/m³ equals 1 g/cm³. This calculator shows both values.
Does temperature affect density?
Yes. Most materials expand when heated, spreading the same mass over a larger volume and thus lowering density. Water is a notable exception between 0°C and 4°C, where it becomes denser as it warms. Values here are typical room-temperature densities.
How can I tell what material something is?
Measure its mass and volume, compute the density, then compare it to the reference table. The calculator flags which of the common materials your result is closest to, though many materials share similar densities so it's not definitive on its own.
