How to Use the Inventory Profit Calculator
List each item that has been sold, with its cost per unit, its selling price per unit, and the quantity sold. The calculator computes each item's profit and profit margin percentage, then sums every item into a total profit figure. Add or remove rows to match your actual sales.
Profit = (Selling Price − Cost) × Quantity Sold
Margin % = (Selling Price − Cost) ÷ Selling Price × 100
Margin % = (Selling Price − Cost) ÷ Selling Price × 100
Example
Selling 80 units of Widget A at $9.99 with a $4.50 cost produces a profit of $439.20 and a margin of about 45.0%.
Common Use Cases
- Checking actual profit earned from a batch of sold products.
- Comparing profit margins across different products in a product line.
- Deciding which items are worth restocking based on their real profitability.
FAQs
- How is this different from the Inventory Value Calculator? The Inventory Value Calculator computes the total VALUE of inventory currently sitting on hand (quantity on hand × unit cost) — it doesn't involve any sales at all. This Inventory Profit Calculator instead computes actual PROFIT from items that have already been SOLD, using selling price minus cost, multiplied by quantity sold — a completely different calculation about revenue and margin rather than stock value.
- Does this account for other business expenses? No — this calculates gross profit from the difference between selling price and unit cost only. It doesn't subtract overhead, shipping, marketing, or other operating expenses, which would need to be factored in separately for net profit.
- Can margin percentage be negative? Yes — if an item's cost is higher than its selling price, both the profit and margin percentage will show as negative, indicating that item is being sold at a loss.
